What Is Brine
Brine is a substance that is produced when oil companies are drilling for oil. Brine contains all of the following substances calcium, bromides, and sodium. When oil companies are drilling on the water such as in the Gulf of Mexico this is what produces brine. Brine is basically just a large amount of produced saltwater that is the aftereffect of oil drilling. There are bodies of water that have a lower concentration of brine and they are freshwater and saline water. Brine may show up more doing the process of oil drilling and the reason why is because brine is already present is salt lake’s and on the bottom of the ocean floors.
What Is Brine Used For
Brine does have many different uses and benefits. It is used a lot in food processing and when cooking. It is also used in the process of pickling and brining of different food products. Brine can be found in deicers because it is very effective in the deicing of roadways, airport runways, vehicles windows, and many other structures that may freeze and accumulate ice. Brine is also used in the technology industry and is used in a variety of different processes.
Why Brine Is Used For Drilling
In the oil industry, there is oil-based drilling and water-based drilling. Oil based drilling has a lot of controversy behind it and if you drill with a water base the water has to be collected properly and disposed of. Brine is more efficient than both of these drillings processes. The reason why is because brine is less corrosive on the environment does not destroy tools and penetrates through many different types of rocks. Some experience drill experts say if you don’t have a brine drilling fluid that you can not drill through most salt sections. When drilling with brine fluids it does not create mud or clay swelling like a water-base drilling fluid will. Brine may be more expensive than the other drilling fluids because it is more effective than the other fluids as well. Brine based drilling has really caught a head of steam within the last 2 years. There are currently different brands of brine on the market just for horizontal drilling and there are multiple different types of salts that are available for brine based drilling.
When it comes to brine for drilling engineers only care about two main advantages and they are how far can the drill penetrate and does the drill have a long run life. Engineers do cherish the fact that brine based drilling does not harm the environment or damage the drilling equipment. Brine based oil drilling is very beneficial in every aspect of drilling. It keeps the environment safe and it does not damage the million-dollar drilling equipment. This saves the government money from having to clean up any waste from drilling. Brine based oil drilling also saves the company money because they do not have cleanup waste and it also eliminates equipment repairs that come along with other forms of fluid drilling.
Brine is one of the lesser-known substances in the world but it has many different usages. It is used from oil drilling to the kitchen. Outside of drilling brine is used in many diverse ways from pickling to bringing food. It is also very impressive that it is also used for cooking, food processing, and deicing. It has no negative effect on the environment but yet is a very strong substance. It makes the drill strong and able to penetrate many different forms of salt rock. Brine is a very beneficial substance that most people probably use on a daily basis but have no idea that they are using the substance or even what it is.
